The Office of Public Affairs and the Office of Campus Activities have worked together to create a comprehensive campus events calendar that is accessible both on the redesigned Home@CUA — — page and in the Nest.

Home@CUA will be the one place where faculty, staff, and students can find out about everything that is happening on campus. Visitors to Home@CUA can filter the Events calendar by categories such as Academic, Arts/Performance, Athletics, Faith, Service, Travel, etc.

Notices that are not specific to a certain date can be posted in the Campus News section of the Nest and linked to from Home@CUA.

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Greccio

Christmas Concert for Charity
7:30 p.m., the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception present the 24th Annual Christmas Concert for Charity. Patronal Medal
Noon, The Catholic University of America and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception will award the Patronal Medal to Carl Anderson, supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus, during a Mass. The medal is awarded jointly by the two institutions on an occasional basis around the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Patronal feast of Catholic University and the Basilica. Its recipient is someone who has rendered distinguished service in the advancement of Marian devotion, theology, or general appreciation of the place of Mary in the life of the Catholic Church. Guide to Safe and Fire-Free Decorations
Please observe the following guidelines to maximize general safety practices, minimize potential fire hazards associated with holiday decorations, and comply with fire prevention regulations:

Interior decorations
• Keep decorations away from exit signs, fire alarm devices (pull stations, smoke and heat detectors, etc.), fire extinguishers, and emergency and normal-use light fixtures.
• Artificial Christmas trees are permitted provided they don’t obstruct doors
• No live or fresh-cut trees are permitted.
• Don’t cover more than 10 percent of a wall surface with paper/posters or other combustible material of the sort used as coverings on walls.
• Use only U.L.-approved "mini" or "LED" decorative lights. Large bulb lights such as C7 or C9 are prohibited.
• Keep decorative lights away from combustible materials (i.e., curtains, paper, etc.).
• Turn off decorative lights when the area or room is unattended.
• Use U.L.-approved power strips with a fuse or a circuit breaker.
• Don’t route electrical cords through doorways, under carpeting, or across hallways, as they become both a fire and a tripping hazard.
• Don’t attach or hang any items from the sprinklers. This is a particularly important requirement because of the potential for breaking the heads, pipes or pipe hangers.
• Don’t use spray-applied artificial snow or other flammable spray decorations.

Public Space
• Decorations in public spaces must be coordinated with the Office of Facilities Operations. Large-scale decorations requiring hanging, mounting, attachment, etc., in public spaces must be placed or overseen by Facilities Operations personnel.

Exterior Decorations
• All University decorations on the exterior of buildings or on the grounds must be placed by and be the responsibility of Facilities Operations. No other exterior decorations are permitted.

Technology Knowledge Base: Safely Storing Computer Files
Did you know that the best and safest places to store your computer files for work are on your M:drive or on your departmental network drives? If your computer breaks down or is updated, files stored in these locations will still be available to you. You should not store your files on your assigned computer's local hard drive (C:). The computer’s hard drive is not backed up by Technology Services, so if the drive crashes or experiences other problems, your files may be lost permanently.

According to University policy, CUA faculty and staff must store files pertaining to University business only on CUA network drives as specified by their department or office. University business files generally must not be stored on local hard drives, removable media, or services, such as Dropbox, SkyDrive, and iCloud, not provided by the University. University employees must abide by the University's Information Assurance and Electronic Communications policies found at

New Information for On-Campus and Faculty/Staff Equipment Loans
On-Campus Seminars, Lectures, Conferences, etc.
Effective Dec. 1, equipment loans will no longer be accepted through the website. Facilities Administration and Services (FAS) will be the sole source of the following equipment for loan for on-campus seminars, lectures, conferences, and other special events:

  • Microphones (handheld, lapel, or wireless)
  • Laptop computers (for events only)
  • Projectors
  • Screens
  • Wireless digital presentation clickers
  • Wireless keyboards
  • Wireless mice

To reserve those items, visit, click Special Events, and fill in the form. If a room is available that meets the requested technology needs it will be assigned through the Offices of Conferences and Pryzbyla Management in lieu of loaner equipment. The cost for replacing lost or damaged equipment will be determined and communicated at the time of the loan.

Short-Term Loans For Faculty and Staff
Short-term loans of laptop computers and conference phones are available through Technology Services. Quantities are limited and items are available for up to one week for conference travel or replacement for a laptop computer being repaired. To request an equipment loan, email Equipment is assigned on a first-come/first-served basis. The cost for replacing lost or damaged equipment will be communicated when the loan is confirmed.

Returning Equipment
Equipment borrowed through FAS and Technology Services and not returned by the date agreed upon will be assessed a daily fine of $5 to the department or student responsible. Borrowed equipment that is lost or damaged will be assessed the cost of replacement; this assessment accompanies the initial loan agreement.
