Announcements

Is CUA Open or Closed?
The Office of Public Affairs wishes to remind faculty and staff that, in case of inclement weather, there are two quick ways to find out if the university is closed or if opening is delayed. The information is usually available no later than 6 a.m. by checking the CUA Web site at http://www.cua.edu
or by calling the university’s main number — 202-319-5000. In addition, the public affairs office contacts all local TV outlets and major radio outlets, which also report the information.

Adopt-A-Platoon
The Office of Campus Ministry would like to thank all the departments and offices that participated in this year’s successful  “Adopt-a-Platoon” project. Campus Ministry received more than $700 in donations for gifts and postage and was able to send more than 160 pounds of gifts to soldiers overseas. Campus Ministry asks everyone to continue to pray for all the soldiers serving overseas.

Training for Cardinal Station
During the Christmas break, CUA upgraded the current version of Cardinal Students. The new Web-based version, Cardinal Station, improves functionality for campus users while providing the same information on student records. The only true difference is the "look and feel," since this latest version operates via the Web. Effective Jan. 3, 2005, the new Web site address is http://cardinalstation.cua.edu .
The current icon on employee PCs (the cardinal bird) will no longer provide access to the system. Once in the Web site, users can navigate via the menu on the left the former "client" applications are under the heading "Student Admin/Human Resources."

To assist with the new navigational process, the Office of Business Services and the Office of the Registrar will provide voluntary training. The training schedule is as follows:

Week One
Jan. 3: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Jan. 4: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Jan. 5: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Jan. 6: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

During Week One, all classes will be held in McMahon Hall, Room 7.

Week Two
Jan. 10: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Jan. 11: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Jan. 12: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Jan. 13: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

During Week Two, all classes will be held in Shahan Hall, Room 302.

Week Three
Jan. 18: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shahan Hall, Room 302
Jan. 19: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pangborn Hall, Room 301

Since space is limited, those who wish to participate are encouraged to register early. To do so, contact Andrew Wolf at wolfa@cua.edu. Those registering should include first and last name, department and preferred training session (date and time).

Diversity Training
The Office of Equal Opportunity announces that it is offering a seminar entitled "EEO and Diversity Training," which will address questions such as "What is Equal Opportunity?" "What is discrimination?" and "How do I deal with a diverse workforce?" The training is available to all CUA employees and will be held on Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to noon, in the Pryzbyla Center, Room 351. Employees are advised to get approval from their supervisors before signing up for the seminar. Those who wish to attend must call the Office of Equal Opportunity at 202-319-6594.

Quarterly Sprinkler Testing
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety and Chesapeake Protection will be conducting the quarterly test of several fire protection systems on campus during the week of Jan. 3, 2005. This will be the first quarterly test of the new systems in Mullen Library, Centennial Village and Conaty Hall.

The crews will begin by checking in at the Power Plant at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 4. The first building they visit will be the Pryzbyla Center, around 7:15 a.m.

Due to the nature of the test, Environmental Health and Safety cannot develop a more detailed schedule. However, the testing will primarily be for the sprinkler systems and fire pumps. The bells should not ring. If they ring, it is an indication of a problem or an accidental activation. Therefore, occupant disruption should be minimal.

The following buildings will be tested:

Columbus School of Law and University Garage
Pryzbyla Center
Millennium North
Millennium South
Crough Center
DuFour Center
Flather Hall
Hannan Hall
Hartke Theatre
Leahy Hall and Computer Center
Grounds Complex
University Health and Fitness Center
Life Cycle Institute
Regan
Ryan

Conaty
Engelhard

Camalier
Reardon
Mullen Library

Those with questions may contact Louis P. Alar, occupational safety and health specialist, Office of Environmental Health and Safety, at 202-319-5789.

Alumni Cathedral Tour
On Jan. 9 at 2 p.m., the Office of Alumni Relations will host the Washington, D.C., alumni chapter for a tour of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle. A coffee reception will follow the tour. The cathedral is located at 1725 Rhode Island Avenue, N.W. The event is free and the CUA community is invited to attend. Since space is limited, those wishing to attend must R.s.v.p. by Jan. 5 to 202-319-5608.
