 Announcements

Message from CPIT Regarding Network Outages
Many members of the CUA community experienced the effects of the problems with the campus network on Monday, June 22. The central systems crashed over the lunch period due to problems with the campus network equipment. During the mid-afternoon, technicians with the Center for Planning and Information Technology (CPIT) determined that the network problems were becoming worse, including the loss of the university’s Internet connection. Due to the cascading failures then in progress, technicians were required to perform emergency maintenance on the central network equipment to resolve the problems. The critical nature of this problem prevented CPIT from doing as much advance notification as it normally does in such situations. CPIT regrets the inconvenience caused to university offices by this disruption of service. For more information, contact CPIT at 202-319-5373.

Children’s Book Drive
The Office of Dining Services is sponsoring a children's book drive to benefit the East Baltimore Development, Inc. Community Resource Center, which ARAMARK volunteers will build during the ARAMARK Building Community Center Enhancement Day on July 23. New and gently used children's books can be dropped off at the Office of Dining Services, Edward J. Pryzbyla University Center, Room 124, through July 22. For more information, contact the dining services office at 202-319-5295.

Summer Baseball Camp at CUA
Catholic University Head Baseball Coach Ross Natoli will conduct his 22nd Annual Instructional Baseball Camp from July 6 to 10. The camp is for players ages 7 to 18 and for all skill and experience levels. CUA Launches “Year for Priests” Web Site
Catholic University has launched a special Web site in celebration of Pope Benedict’s “Year for Priests.” The Web site features a multimedia slideshow of CUA alumnus Father John Adams, president of SOME in Washington, D.C. Catholic University’s “Year for Priests” Web site will feature other slideshows — each one dedicated to a priest who is a Catholic University alumnus. Changes in Enrollment Services
As announced by Very Rev. David M. O’Connell, C.M., university president, the offices of the registrar and student accounts have merged to form the Office of Enrollment Services under the direction of Associate Vice President for Enrollment Services and University Registrar Adriana Farella.

Construction is underway on the new Enrollment Services Student Service Center in McMahon Hall, Room 10, formerly the Office of the Registrar. The new service center is expected to open in early August. The changes in McMahon are a first step before all enrollment management related activities, including enrollment services, will be consolidated in the renovated Cardinal Hall.

As part of this reorganization the two computer lab classrooms on the ground floor of McMahon are being relocated to the ground floor of Leahy Hall. Construction has begun on these spaces and the new computer lab classrooms will be available for fall 2009 classes.

While some staff members formerly assigned to the Office of Student Accounts have moved to the ground floor of McMahon, most student accounting services are still being provided in Leahy Hall, Room 140. The remainder of the student accounts staff will move to McMahon upon completion of the new service center.

A new enrollment services Web page is being designed and will replace the current registrar and student accounts pages later this summer.

For more information, call 202-319-5300.

New Tax Withholding Tables
The new 2009 withholding tables issued to implement The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA’s Making Work Pay Credit) may place some employees in a slightly “under withheld” situation by year-end.
In particular, the following people may be affected:

  • Married couples with both spouses earning wages
  • Individuals working multiple jobs at one time
  • Anyone who may be claimed as a dependent on another person’s return
  • People receiving income from a pension
  • Individuals receiving Economic Recovery Payments

The Internal Revenue Service’s online Withholding Calculator has been updated to reflect the impact of the Making Work Pay Credit. Anyone who thinks they may be at risk of under withholding may wish to use this calculator and then file a new W-4 form. For more information, visit: Publication 15-T at www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p15t.pdf, or the Making Work Pay Tax Credit and IRS Withholding Calculator at www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html, or contact the Office of Payroll at 202-319-5512.
