Fire Marshal Inspections on Campus
The Office of Environmental Health and Safety advises the university community that on Monday, June 5, the Washington, D.C., Fire Marshal arrived at CUA to inspect the entire campus. Inspections will continue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the next two weeks.

Below are some useful tips related to fire prevention and safety.

For the General CUA Population:
The basic keys to compliance are general housekeeping and good storage practices. Keep all fire doors closed and ensure that corridors and stairwells are clear of clutter and stored materials — particularly combustibles. Remove unnecessary extension cords and do not overload electrical outlets.

For Laboratory Personnel:
Improve your general housekeeping and ensure that all chemicals are labeled and properly stored. Make sure all liquids are in secondary containment if they are not kept in a storage cabinet. Separate incompatibles, remove clutter from ventilation hoods and make sure there is no food or drink in the labs.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will escort the Fire Marshal at all times. Building administrators or designees are welcome to accompany the inspection team. When possible, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety will provide a 24-hour notice of an impending inspection of each building on campus.

For more information, contact the Facilities Service Center at 202-319-512. The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will try to return phone calls within 24 hours. If you are required by regulations to do inspections or keep records, make sure they are organized and readily available.
