Orientation Extended
The Office of the Dean of Students announces a new university initiative for the fall semester titled "Orientation Extended." Higher education research suggests that the first six weeks of college are the most important in an undergraduate student’s career. Students who effectively integrate into the university community and experience a sense of belonging are more likely to remain enrolled through graduation.

Building on the foundation of the traditional CUA Orientation program, Orientation Extended will become a continuing forum for transitional education by  providing a more intensive exploration of how to become a successful student at CUA.  The program will include the following new initiatives and activities:

  • Workshops and seminars related to study skills, time management, campus resources and writing skills
  • Freshman Service Day
  • Discussions and presentations about transitioning into college

All CUA staff, offices, departments and student organizations are invited to submit programs, workshops and lectures for inclusion in Orientation Extended. Themes may include:

  • Building Relationships (developing skills in establishing healthy relationships)
  • Academic Success (establishing good academic habits suited to the rigors of college)
  • Getting Involved (opportunities for co-curricular activities, community service, academic enrichment)
  • Spirituality, Health, Wellness and Personal Safety
  • Diversity Awareness
  • Civic Responsibility and Involvement

Faculty and staff members should send submissions to Martha Krichbaum at krichbaum@cua.edu.  All appropriate programs will be included on the University Center, Student Programs and Events online calendar. Submissions received by July 19 may be included in various print marketing materials that will be distributed to students. For more information, contact Michael Andrews, assistant dean of students, at andrewsm@cua.edu or Ellen Thorp, assistant dean of students, at thorp@cua.edu. Additional information will be available at the Orientation Extended Web site, http://takethefield.cua.edu, beginning Monday, July 24.
